Development

MinVayu needs to supply an affordable wind turbine that can be installed and maintained by village mechanics.

Commercial small wind systems are designed and priced based on a western market for high value uses such as off-grid cottages; telecom sites; army; boats and industrial applications. Within developing countries, their distributions networks are city based, targeting similar markets.  They are designed to be installed & maintained by well-trained, city-based engineers whose high salaries & overheads are a significant part of the installed cost.

Hugh Pigott of Scoraig Wind has developed an open-source turbine, however it includes some components that require expertise to achieve necessary quality, and is based on a model where people are trained to build their own turbine.  This works quite well on a small scale, with motivated – largely hobbyist – customers. The technology has not been transferred, on any significant scale, to poor farmers in developing countries.

MinVayu's initial product will be based on the Scoraig design, which will be incrementally improved to make it more suitable to rural India. In parallel MinVayu is mobilising pro-bono engineering to develop a low-cost turbine optimised for small scale, and low winds.



Tower

Currently a lattice-work tower is used. A transition to pipes would reduce costs, and make it easier to erect.
